Guzoo Winter 2004

This pen contains both rabbits and hens. The rabbits have no where to hide, and the roost is to high for the chickens. Chickens and rabbits should NEVER be housed within the same enclosure, or even near one another. They both carry different strains of coccidia that the other species is very susceptible to and it often proves fatal. I find it shocking that the vet that apparantly visits Guzoo weekly hasn't pointed this out.

One of the many cockatiels/budgies/lovebirds in this cage. The bottom was filthy, covered in old seeds and feces. The wire used for the cage is inadequate...birds are very sensitive to Heavy Metal poisoning. Rust is extremely dangerous, especially to hook bills that chew and climb on the bars with their beaks. The hardware cloth used is galvanized in Zinc, the most dangerous metal for birds. This cannot be denied as you cannot buy safe hardware cloth unless you special order stainless steel wire, which is quite expensive. Stainless steel hardware cloth is easily recognized as it has a shiney, not a dull finish. Rabbits, in their filthy pen, surrounded by buns thrown to them by the public. Note the disgusting water dish.

This Blue and Gold macaw was a sad site. Macaws are extremely intelligent animals, approximately as intelligent as a 2 year old human child. With a 3.5 foot wingspan, these amazing creatures are meant to fly free. In captivity, humans have to go out of their way to provide them with everything they could ever want or need to make up for it. Macaws are playful, intelligent, problem solving, social animals. They live in flock settings and require hours of one on one attention daily, including preening. This poor bird has to sit in it's filthy cage, watching people gawk at him. His cage is completely filthy, his food dish is caked in feces and old food...the only toys he has are metal rings. No puzzel toys, nothing colourful, no beads, rope, bells, climbing structures, or any form of enrichment. There is rust visible on the bars, which is extremely toxic to birds. The outdoor portion of this birds cage, equally as barren, is made of standard chainlink fence which contains zinc, also extremely toxic. Macaws need a variety of different wooden toys to chew on, and new toys regularly. If you look up into the left hand corner of the cage, you'll notice that the macaw also has access to an exposed electrical outlet.

This cage, which is something you would expect to see for dogs, holds two blackbears. Their water dish is that blue plastic pool full of ice and snow that one of the bears is sitting on. They paced back and forth, and coughed. There was nobody outside that we could see, so we gave them some water from our waterbottles on our hands. They shoved eachother to get to the water, and we went to the bathroom to refill it multiple times. By the time we left two hours later, they still had no water.

This poor Coyote was being kept in a small garden shed that had been converted into a cage. There was no where to hide and he ran around in circles, nervous, before finally trying to find privacy behind the only furnishings in his cage.

We saw this pig sleeping in that pile of bread in the background, a small distance away from the main part of Guzoo. He had no water and drank three full bottles of water. For anybody about to shout "TRESSPASS!" , we did not go into the building, as you can see by the snow.
